We’re thrilled to announce that the Shire has received the prestigious Waste Management Award at the Tidy Towns 2024 Awards for their incredible Captivate Capel 2024 project!
Themed “Waste to Wonder,” this inspiring event turned waste into art and action, engaging over 3,000 attendees, including students, volunteers, and community groups.
Through creative workshops, vibrant performances, and hands-on activities, the Shire fostered sustainable practices and united the community in reducing waste and protecting the environment.
Event Highlights:
• A spectacular waste-to-art parade led by the Junkadelic Band
• Workshops on composting, zero-waste cooking, and modern cloth nappies
• Interactive activities like native bee hotel making and litter-based art installations
• Inspiring performances by the Formidable Vegetable Band.
Shire President Doug Kitchen celebrated the win, saying:
“The Shire of Capel is thrilled to receive this recognition. It validates the hard work of volunteers, schools, community groups and staff, who contributed to the project. This accolade underscores the value of creative community engagement in achieving sustainable outcomes and inspires further commitment to environmental stewardship, which is a key part of the Shire’s plan for the future”
The Shire’s efforts have already made a measurable impact, with increased recycling, reduced landfill waste, and stronger community collaboration.
Looking forward, they're planning even more environmental education and sustainable initiatives to build on this success!
