Bunbury Harvey Regional Council (BHRC) has advised the Shire that from Monday, 2 December, trucks presenting with FOGO product containing unacceptable levels of contamination will be directed to landfill for disposal.
This is in response to high contamination volumes from residential bins that exceed the decontamination capacity at BHRC.
Until further notice, the collection contractors will assess the load going into the truck, and if contamination levels are too high, the load will be taken to landfill. It is important that the community continues to separate their general waste and recycling from FOGO correctly to ensure as little contamination is present as possible.
There will be no change to the collection frequencies and residents are asked to continue to use their lime green FOGO bin for organic matter only for their weekly collections.
Everyone in the community plays an important role in reducing FOGO contamination, further information and tips can be found at https://www.wastesorted.wa.gov.au/fogo. Uncontaminated FOGO are made into high-quality compost or soil conditioner for use in the community on verges, parks and garden.
The Shire remains committed to the important role FOGO plays in diverting waste from landfill and recognises that high contamination impacts BHRC’s ability to process and produce a high-quality end product.
