Our History

Ron Maidment Archives Room

Situated in the Iluka Capel Public Library, the Ron Maidment Archives Room is the centre for our Shire’s history.

The Collection preserves and celebrates the history of places, people and activities within the Shire.

The collection consists of images, booklets and reports, community newsletters, rates books, oral history recordings, family papers, books including inscribed bibles, and museum objects such as textiles, original Shire Hall artefacts, and honour boards.

Opening Hours

  • Thursdays: 10am – 4pm


Donations of historical or contemporary images, ephemera and documents about the Shire of Capel or to families residing within the Shire, residents, events, businesses and industries are encouraged and warmly received.

To accept your donations and to make them available to the members of the public, we will ask you to fill in an appropriate ‘Accession Form’ with your full details and details of the donated material. The forms can be obtained by contacting the Archives staff at localhistory@capel.wa.gov.au, or in person at the Shire of Capel Library.

Research Requests

Research is usually carried out by volunteers.

In order to provide you with the best results and to ensure you receive the information you are seeking, we encourage you to fill in a Research Request Form. You can contact Archives staff or complete a form in person at the Iluka Capel Library.

Research results can either be emailed to you or you can make a follow-up appointment with our volunteers or staff to go through your request and the research results.
