The Capel Shire Council awarded Perkins (WA) Pty Ltd the tender for the Capel Civic Precinct Stage 3 Development works at its December council meeting.
The $2.7 million project works include a formal amphitheatre, relocation of the existing playground with inclusion of a new all abilities playground and nature play space, which will start early 2018.
There will be a new skateable link between the existing skate park and Forrest Road, along with shelters, BBQs, seating and landscaping.
The space will be further activated by a youth recreation space, including a basketball half court and town square precinct.
Capel Shire Chief Executive Officer Paul Sheedy said this project would bring vibrancy to the town, attract visitors and allow more events to take place in the Shire.
Mr Sheedy said a sustainable Civic Precinct was critical to its effectiveness and value to the community and incorporated a number of sustainable characteristics, including retention of some established native trees, provision for sustainable display gardens and provision of drainage and native vegetation areas.
This project is made possible through the Australian Government Building Better Regions Fund, the State Government through the South West Development Commission Royalties for Regions, Lotterywest, the Shire of Capel and the Department of Communities.
The Precinct was identified as a high priority action in the endorsed Capel Townsite Strategy in July 2008 and has continued to remain a priority of both Council and the community in the years following.
Regular project updates will be sent out in a monthly bulletin, if you are interested in receiving this, email mailto:email@example.com with the subject line, Capel Civic Precinct Bulletin.
