Two councillors received recognition for their long service and dedication to serving the community at the 2017 WA Local Government Convention this month.
Cr Jennifer Scott was awarded a Local Government Merit Award and Cr Barry Bell received a Long and Loyal Service Award at the convention on August 2.
Cr Scott volunteers her time for many community groups, including Meals on Wheels, Capel Cemetery Survey Team and Capel Primary School.
Her strong interest in preserving the Shire’s history is the driver for her volunteer contribution to the Ron Maidment Archives Room at the Capel Public Library.
“I am passionate about the Shire and I believe in investing in the community,” Cr Scott said.
“It is an honour and a privilege to be recognised by my peers and I will continue my involvement in the community to see it thrive and grow with good strategic direction.”
Cr Bell has been a volunteer fire fighter at the Elgin Bush Fire Brigade for more than 47 years.
He is a member of the Shire’s Emergency Management Committee, Emergency Recovery Committee and Bush Fire Advisory Committee.
Cr Bell has a strong interest in upgrading the rural road network and has represented the Shire at the South West Regional Road Group.
“I am very honoured to receive this award, I don’t do it for the awards, I do it for the community,” he said.
“Since becoming a councillor 14 and a half years ago, I have advocated for rural road upgrades and improvements.”
